An antique medal from the Independent Order of Oddfellows is the centerpiece of this necklace, from the ladies' branch, the Daughters of Rebekah. Found in 1819, they were the first fraternal group to included women, in 1851. This silver Oddfellows ceremonial medallion features beautiful detailing and hangs from eight faceted flat beads on a double gun metal chain.
The antique medallion from the 1930s features much symbolism, first with the three chain links signifying Friendship, Love and Truth, known for the Three Link Fraternity. The links symbolize the chain that binds the members together. with two crossed staffs with three chain links at the top with the Rebekah's rose. Also features the Rebekah symbols, which include two females standing on both sides of a beehive, white lily centered by the all seeing eye. These symbols collectively represent the virtues of women from the Victorian era. In smaller type is reads "We command you to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and education the orphan."
